Civilian Employment Programs
Students | College Graduates | Transitioning Military
The Army provides experiential learning opportunities through co-op and student temporary employment programs which allow students to gain hands-on experience and practical training. These programs enable students to earn a salary while continuing their studies. Also, participation in the programs may qualify students for a permanent appointment to civilian position in the Army.
AMRDEC participates in a number of Student Educational Employment Programs, offering year-round employment and valuable work experience:- Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)
- Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)
- Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART)
(Note: For permanent employment jobs, visit www.usajobs.gov and www.cpol.army.mil.)
Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) – STEP provides maximum flexibility to both students and managers because the nature of the work does not have to be related to the student's academic or career goals. Highlights:- Temporary employment throughout the school year
- Summer opportunities
- Excellent opportunity for employer and prospective full time employee to get to know each other
- Excellent introduction into science, engineering, or business professions for students undecided on field of study or career path
- Students beginning work as a STEP and demonstrating sound working skills and practices may continue on into the SCEP program
All awardees must be a U.S. citizen, 16 years of age or older, eligible to receive and hold a security clearance, and must be enrolled in school and provide letter of good standing.
For more information see www.opm.gov/employ/students/intro.asp
Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) – Functioning as a traditional co-op program, SCEP allows a student to work during specified periods dictated in a written agreement between the work agency, school, and student. Upon graduation, the student may be converted into a career or career-conditional appointment related to the school and work study experience. Highlights: Normally junior or senior student (requirements are the same as STEP) Tuition assistance
For more information see www.opm.gov/employ/students/intro.asp
Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART)
SMART is a Department of Defense sponsored competitive scholarship program that supports students who wish to obtain a degree in science, math or engineering. Each SMART fellow will receive a salary/stipend based upon the student&s academic status, full tuition, and payment for required fees. Students may be appointed as DoD term employees during the tenure of the scholarship/fellowship. The scholarship is valid throughout the duration of each student&s course of study. Upon acceptance of the award, each awardee signs a DoD civilian service agreement for employment with the DoD civilian science and technology workforce upon completion of his or her fellowship. Term of post-degree employment with a DoD lab is commensurate with fellowship length.
Applications are accepted in February. Awards notification is announced annually each spring. Scholarship award winners will have three weeks to accept or reject the offer after the official notification.
All awardees must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older, able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories, willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD, a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (at all schools attended) and, pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the fields listed on the website (link provided below).
