Obsolescence Management

Helping customers minimize cost and schedule impacts when managing systems or sub-systems that have a greater life span than the components used within the systems.

Proactive obsolescence assessments to quantify severity of issues
Utilizes obsolescence risk mitigation design techniques
Cost modeling to calculate resolution costs for budget development
Solution options at part, board, sub-system, and full system levels
Prototype development of solution option
Rapid response residual material locater to prevent production delays

The accelerating pace of electronic advances, Commercial-off-the-Shelf/Non-developmental Item (COTS/NDI) insertion, extension of weapon system life cycles, and emerging aging aircraft issues is presenting new obsolescence management challenges to Army program managers. Addressing the increasing complexity of obsolescence management, AMRDEC’s Electronics Analysis and Prototyping (EAP) Lab has an established program utilizing processes and procedures in accordance with DoD policy for identifying and resolving obsolescence issues. EAP has achieved numerous successes on Army and Navy weapon systems implementing cost effective technology based solutions to obsolescence management problems. EAP’s capabilities include:

Acquisition contract Scope of Work (SOW)preparation, proposal
evaluation/negotiations
Comprehensive obsolescence management risk assessments
Program parts selection
Component availability projections
Projected obsolescence resolution sustainment costs for out-year budgeting
Solution recommendations, cost analysis, and implementation plans
Redesign and testing of obsolete hardware
Obsolescence notice alert monitoring and notification
Continuous Technology Refreshment (CTR) analysis

Proactive obsolescence management, early in the life cycle of a weapon or aviation system, is critical for maintaining operational readiness for the complicated systems of today’s Defense Services. We consider exponential advancements in technology and provide early detection of parts obsolescence, thereby increasing response time and giving customers more cost effective and sound alternatives.
