Four major management assignments in Land Combat Missile Systems have been made this week by the U.S. Army Missile Command. They include the naming of new project managers for the Pershing, Sergeant, and TOW missile systems, and a new deputy to the Deputy Commanding General, Land Combat Systems….
Col. James N. Lothrop has been named Project Manager of the Army’s TOW weapon system.
He replaces Lt. Col. Ballard B. Small who retired from military service.
Col. Lothrop, who has more than 25 years of Army service, comes to Redstone Arsenal from Dayton, Ohio, where he recently completed the Army’s Project Manager School.
As Project Manager for TOW, he will direct activities on one of the Army’s newest guided missile systems being developed for use by infantrymen against heavy armor and field fortifications.
Before attending school at Dayton, Col. Lothrop studied at the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Penn. Prior to that he served with the III Corps Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla., and in the Office, Chief of Research and Development, Department of the Army.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy, the Colonel received a M.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from New York University.
During World War II, he saw duty with the 95th Infantry Division, Third Army in Europe. He also served with the Eighth Army in Korea.
Among other assignments, Col. Lothrop was stationed with Headquarters, United States Army in Europe, in Heidelburg, Germany; the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base, N.M., and with the First Guided Missile Battalion at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Among his decorations are the Bronze Star with cluster and the Army Commendation Medal.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Col. Lothrop attended Cristobal High School, Panama Canal Zone, and graduated from Galileo High School in San Francisco, California.
